The Raft of the Medusa

This untitled painting from the series "The Raft of the Medusa" in 1996 created by german artist Martin Kippenberger. This painting grabbed my attention initially because of the gruesome faces and jarring red background. The more I looked into the painting, I notice miscellaneous body parts throughout the painting, as well the saying, "Je suis meduse" which translates to "I'm stunned". Kippenberger's cartoonish approach to the original painting "The Raft of the Medusa" is almost comedic. In the painting, an invisible ship can be seen on the horizon about to rescue to shipwreck present in the forefront.
